Can't sleep. For some reason, I can't get comfortable in bed. I have a strong suspicion it's because Droy washed the sheets, and then put them on in the wrong order. The flat sheet goes right on top of the fitted sheet, then comes the thermal blanket, and then finally the quilt. However, he's got the flat sheet between the blanket and the quilt, so I get the distinctively odd sensation of the rough thermal blanket on my skin instead of the sheet. I haven't decided what to do yet... perhaps I'll sleep in the computer room, where the sheets are on correctly. Of course, I'll never hear the end of it if I do.

I did manage to sleep off and on for the past five hours... I know this because I had some crazy, whacked-out dreams. I dreamt that Old Navy was full of choral singers, and that our General Manager Jason was the conductor. It was weird, because he seemed so natural as a conductor... even after I was fully awake, it was hard for me to get over the notion that he probably had no experience with music. In my dream, we were working as usual, but somebody got some pieces out of the music library (!!!) and we started singing through them in the middle of the store. The customers, of course, were rapt with attention (the ones that could be bothered, of course... the rest just ignored us). We sang through a few pieces that were divided into men's/women's choirs, but for some reason the women's choir sounded like it was coming from outside the store. Very strange. It's one of those dreams where everything seems perfectly natural and right, and does even after you wake up, until you really think about it and realize how absurd it all is.

I'm not sure, but I think one of my supervisors at work may have it in for me. It always seems like she has extra things for me to do that exceed, and usually supercede, my normal duties. She tends to be very nitpicky about anything I do wrong. And tonight, before I started counting the deposit, I noticed that the chairs were all missing from the office. I found them in the back room, and so I took one back inside and started counting. Then she came in later and took it out, and made me stand to count, because she said it would be faster that way!

The thing is, in other ways she is not unusually mean to me... For example, we had a very nice conversation after work about her new car. It's just that I see her telling me to do things she doesn't tell the other FES's. Am I just being paranoid?

Hello, everyone... or no one, as the case may be.

As you've probably noticed, I have not blogged for about, oh, 9 months or so. That's because I was in the process of gestation and have since produced a baby. Kidding, kidding!

Seriously, I haven't had the time or inclination to blog much over the past 9 months, but there have been plenty of things to blog about. Here's a quick rundown:

As I may or may not have blogged about previously, my contract was not renewed for my job, so I am now employed by Gap, Inc., instead of by an institution of higher learning. Although Gap is a pretty good employer with good benefits, I don't make very much money, and have to rely on teaching voice on the side to make ends meet.

And, in the interests of making ends meet, I have moved back to the Iowa City area. However, the only way of being able to afford to live here is to have a roommate. So, Droy and I have moved into a new place together (we made the move in July). Our new place is quite nice, with a gas fireplace, central A/C and heating, washer and dryer, dishwasher, and two decent-sized bedrooms. It even has a garage! We've had ups and downs (mostly concerning the level of tidiness that each of us finds acceptable), but it's working out nicely. Truth be told, neither of us would have chosen to cohabitate yet had circumstances not dictated so, but them's the breaks.

I was promoted at Old Navy to the position of Front End Supervisor, which was cool (I got keys to the office and lots of other neat things), but that position, per se, is on the verge of being eliminated in the new leadership structure. Eh... as long as they still pay me, I won't make a huge fuss. But boy oh boy, I would love to be back in Academia.

Just had my first major repair for my car... It ended up costing about $300, which wasn't quite as much as I was expecting, and also is pretty good for a car that's three years old and has 97,000 miles on it. I had tried to repair it myself, and partially succeeded, but my extremely limited diagnostic skills were not sufficient to completely understand the nature of the problem. I can write more about that if anyone is interested, but I suspect nobody is.

I finally convinced Droy (or "D", as I will refer to him henceforth) to come to my Mom's house for Christmas, something which he was EXTREMELY apprehensive about. However, he had a pretty good time of it, and my family made him feel quite welcome (which certainly surprised me). On the way back to Iowa, got my first speeding ticket in seven or eight years. Was NOT happy about that.

I had a recital in the fall... had some good repertoire, but couldn't get singers. The concert was pretty decent, but I still didn't pass. I have to do it again, and I STILL can't find singers. Oh, well. At least if I fail this time, I'll be out of the program and can get on with my life (such as it is).

Well, those are the major developments... I'll be here on and off, commenting on things I think need comments.

As always, Read Lileks!

By the way, I don't read Andrew Sullivan anymore. He's gotten weird and screedy about some strange stuff, and I can't say that I'm completely sure of his political direction anymore. He used to be a real inspiration for me as a gay conservative, but he's kind of left the building now. Instead, I recommend Gay Patriot as a blog that fuses the best aspects of being gay and a conservative outlook.
